Staff at The Oaks Havant Crematorium selected Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to be one of the recipients of money raised through a national recycling scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management.
The team at The Oaks Havant Crematorium have a real passion for wildlife and sustainability and their beautiful 14 acres of surrounding land is testament to this. The acreage is home to a mixture of native broadleaved trees, formal lawns and shrub boarders combined with wildflower and grass meadows, which is great for protecting nesting birds and creating favourable and natural habitats for wildlife such as butterflies and bees.
The site provides a brilliant focus on natural space and plantings and is dedicated to helping wildlife to thrive. Beehives are located around the wildflower and grass meadows, encouraging 7 different species of bees as well as a wide range of other pollinator species. The site is well designed to create spaces for wildlife and the team continue to monitor and manage it to allow species to thrive there.
Since opening in 2013, the Trust has been working with The Crematorium to develop the previously poor-quality agricultural land into a varied wildlife haven, to protect and preserve the environment and create new spaces for wildlife around the site. The woodland within and surrounding the land has also been designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) as it is a semi-natural ancient woodland.
