New Wilder Group Launches in Hook

In January last year, Amanda read an article in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust magazine about supporting local community groups and, concerned with the increasingly isolated pockets of wild areas in her village of Hook (Northeast Hampshire), was inspired to create a Wilder group to protect and restore wildlife locally.

Amanda and fellow local wildlife enthusiast, Pete, met with our Engagement Officer Craig for a walk around the village and shared some initial ideas and their aspirations. After a year of planning and galvanising support from more local like-minded community members, Wilder Hook officially launched in April of this year.

When asking Amanda how the group plans to restore wildlife in Hook, she said: “We will allow the grass to grow long, sow native wildflowers, remove invasive species, build dead hedges, survey the local flora and fauna, make woodpiles, plant native shrubs, plug gaps in hedgerows, and more!

Amanda kindly provided us with photos from around the local area:

Wilder Hook aims to:

  • Improve the biodiversity of wild, public areas within Hook
  • Increase abundance of the wildlife that already exists in Hook
  • Encourage community involvement in wildlife activities

“We are very lucky in Hook to already have so many areas that are a haven for wildlife. We are equally lucky to have an amazing community in Hook, of people who know each other and who talk to each other. Let’s put those two together; find out why wildlife corridors are so important and really engage in protecting and extending the wildlife on our doorstep”. Amanda, Wilder Hook Founder
