Discovering Pop's Wood Nature Reserves: A Haven for both Wildlife and the Community

The Pop's Wood Nature Reserves are new community woodland sites located in Bembridge and Brading dedicated to preserving local habitats, wildlife and providing a peaceful retreat for visitors, owned and managed by a community group.

The first reserve in Bembridge was established through the efforts of Imogen Baden-Powell, the great-niece of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouts. The land, saved from development, has been transformed into a thriving habitat supporting many woodland species including the iconic Red Squirrel - thanks to the dedication of nature warden Phillip Sard his team of volunteers and the local community.

Visitors to this site can enjoy a variety of activities, from peaceful walks along shaded paths to learning about local flora and fauna through informative displays. Beautifully crafted wooden carvings, seating areas plus a squirrel hide can also be enjoyed.

Recently, Pop's Wood expanded its reach by securing a second woodland site along the old Railway near Brading watched over by a magnificent carving of a White-tailed eagle along with a rustic picnic bench and information about species using the woodland.

The acquisition of a third site in West Wight is also underway…watch this space!

The collective Pop's Woods are more than just nature reserves; they are community hubs. Events like the official opening in Bembridge, attended by Isle of Wight Council leaders, highlight the reserve's role in bringing people together. The mission is clear: to educate younger generations about the importance of our local nature, provide opportunities to connect with nature and to promote sustainable living.

Our Wilder Communities Officer – Tina Whitmore and Reserves Officer Emma Hunt have been working with Phil providing support, suggestions and guidance on managing and enhancing the biodiversity of the new community nature reserves, to help ensure the long-term sustainability of these habitats.

Pop's Wood relies on the support of individuals and businesses to continue its conservation efforts. Donations help maintain the reserves and fund educational programs aimed at fostering a love for nature in the community.

Whether you're a local resident or a visitor to the Isle of Wight, the Pop's Wood Nature Reserves offer a unique opportunity for us to pause and enjoy our natural surroundings whilst also supporting important conservation work.
