Nature Positive Business Pledge

Nature restoration is essential for a sustainable economy, and a critical opportunity for businesses.

We know nature conservation and restoration is not the enemy of a flourishing economy, but is an essential foundation for it.

Together with our corporate partners, members and supporters, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has developed a Business Pledge, a statement of support for the necessary actions needed to foster sustainable growth, support responsible businesses, and protect our natural environment.

This initiative underscores our collective commitment to supporting environmentally conscious business and sustainable growth, together with achieving national goals for nature recovery.

The widespread, cross-sector business support for the pledge serves to highlight the fact that helping nature is not just good for the planet, but good for businesses and the economy too. Restoring nature is a critical opportunity to deliver new jobs and business opportunities in the region, from more sustainable products and practices to creating a market for ecosystem services and nature-based solutions.

The pledge not only supports the alignment of our business partners with the Trust’s mission, but also aims to encourage supportive action from the Government and local decision-makers. This engagement is crucial for creating the policy environment needed to support and empower businesses who are doing the right thing – helping both nature and our economy to thrive.

FAQs:

What does the pledge involve?

The Business Pledge is a statement of support for a sustainable vision for the region and a set of key aims. This includes the key changes needed to support more sustainable businesses and encourage green economic growth, whilst also delivering nature’s recovery.

Unlike other pledges and initiatives, the Trust’s Business Pledge does not involve corporate target setting. It functions as a standalone statement of agreement with, and support for, the priorities for supporting sustainable business and nature recovery in the region.

The pledge also serves as an engagement piece for both local and national policymakers. Policy changes are crucial for creating the environment needed to reward businesses for doing the right thing, and ensure a level playing field where nature-positive business becomes the norm, not the exemption.

Why is the pledge important?

The pledge recognises that securing a healthy natural world is not the enemy of economic growth, but essential for it. The costs of environmental damage are already being felt by our businesses and communities in the region, and these costs will increase further if key environmental issues are left unchecked. From water pollution to erosion, flood mitigation and overheating; the Business Pledge recognises the clear link between a healthy environment and securing a resilient economy.

Environmental degradation represents a drag on economic growth, as well as a hazard to our health, and the health of our local communities. Meanwhile, action to improve and enhance the environment represents a vital economic opportunity. Restoring nature offers the potential to create new markets for ecosystem services and sustainable products, as well as shoring-up the foundations of our food system and improving water quality.

What are the benefits for signatories?

Signatories to the pledge will receive associated communications and publicity assets from our marketing & communications team for use, as well as access to associated promotion opportunities. This includes publication of your organisation’s logo on our website alongside the associated signatory.

Signatory organisations will be invited to participate in associated opportunities and initiatives as and when they arise, including in relation to public affairs, press and media. This could include, but is not limited to, press interviews, media coverage, publication coverage, meetings with officials, MPs and government personnel.

Who can sign up to the pledge?

The pledge is open to businesses of all sectors and sizes working with the Trust in an associated capacity, such as a corporate partner, supporter, member organisation, project sponsor or programme affiliate.

The pledge is a voluntary commitment to express support for the environmental sustainability goals outlined. Signing the pledge does not create any legally binding obligations on the part of the company or any other parties.

By signing this pledge, signatories consent for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to use their company name in work directly relating to the pledge – for example, in letters to MPs, parliamentary candidates, and in communications output.
