Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is proud to announce that John Durnell, Director of Nature-Based Solutions and Managing Director of Arcadian Ecology & Consulting, has been awarded the Marsh Charitable Trust Leadership and Innovation in Nature Restoration Award.

Presented annually by The Wildlife Trusts, this distinguished award is part of the Marsh Charitable Trust Awards, which celebrate exceptional individuals whose innovative work drives transformative conservation efforts across the UK.

This highly esteemed accolade recognises John’s exceptional leadership and innovation in championing nature-based solutions (NbS) and his transformative contributions to UK nature conservation.

With more than 27 years working for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, John’s tireless dedication and pioneering work has helped to position the charity as a national leader in nature-based solutions (NbS), exemplified by the creation of England’s first nutrient mitigation scheme on the Isle of Wight. This groundbreaking programme addresses the environmental impacts of new housing developments while creating thriving spaces for nature.

John’s achievements highlight his visionary leadership in advancing NbS, including forging partnerships with Natural England, local authorities, and other stakeholders. John’s efforts have set new standards for collaboration and innovation - delivering tangible benefits for wildlife, local communities, and the broader environment.

In just four years, this work has enabled the Trust to acquire over 500 acres of degraded land, with a further 600 acres in the pipeline, converting it into thriving natural habitats and inspiring similar projects nationwide. These achievements have significantly advanced the Trust’s ambitious 30x30 goal – to protect 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030 as well as build climate resilience and reduce pollution through restoring ecosystems.

John Durnell, Director of Nature-Based Solutions and Managing Director of Arcadian Ecology & Consulting, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said:
"Receiving this award is a humbling experience and a testament to the incredible team and partners I have the privilege of working with – it is a true reflection of the collective effort of a large number of technical officers and partners who have embraced the potential of nature-based solutions to create a healthier environment. Together, we’ve demonstrated the power of nature-based solutions to tackle some of our most pressing environmental challenges while bringing life back to the land.

“I’m proud to play a role in demonstrating how nature recovery and sustainable development can go hand in hand, paving the way for others to follow."

Debbie Tann MBE, Chief Executive, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust said:
"John’s innovation, vision, and sheer determination have transformed our approach to nature recovery. His work not only delivers measurable results for wildlife and people but also inspires others across the conservation community. John embodies the spirit of leadership and innovation that is essential to reversing the nature crisis.”

Craig Bennett, Chief Executive, The Wildlife Trusts said: “Huge congratulations to John, and even greater thanks to all of the brilliant volunteers, staff members, and projects which are helping precious wildlife to recover. Without the persistence of our nature heroes, our towns and wild places would be greyer and duller. John's award highlights our appreciation for these wonderful people and the incredible impact they have as changemakers.”
