Blashford Lakes: Small Mammal Trapping and Handling
Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve,
Ellingham Drove, Ringwood, Hampshire, BH24 3PJAbout the event
Come along to Blashford Lakes to learn how we trap and handle small mammals.
The afternoon event - 29th August, 4:00pm - 5:30pm will focus on the species we are aiming to catch, and for participants to learn how Longworth Traps work. Each person will learn how to set-up the trap (bait, bedding) and then choose a location to set it overnight.
The following morning - 30th August from 9:15am - 10:30am everybody will return to the centre. During this session we will retrieve our traps, learn how to check them safely, and learn how to handle and identify any small mammals that have been caught.
We will learn how to tell the difference between mice, voles and shrews, and talk about the welfare that needs to be considered when trapping.
Please note: we cannot guarantee to catch animals in every trap, so some people may not be able to handle animals, as keeping stress levels low is paramount.
W e will also have a range of mammal things to look at, including skulls, antlers, footprints and mammal poo!
Tickets are required for each participant. Your ticket is a combined ticket, for 29th and 30th August.
Please note, if you are booking for your young person, but do not intend to set traps/handle mammals yourself, then please only buy a ticket for your young person. All children must be accompanied! Suitable for adults, and those aged 10+.
