Citizen Science Marine Champion for Solent Seascape Project
Locations all over Hampshire and Isle of Wight
Times, days and frequency we'd like you to be available: No set times or days or set time commitment, you can sign up to events as and when you would like.
Purpose of volunteer role:
- This role involves participating and assisting with various citizen science activities such as intertidal surveys and timed species search alongside the Solent coastline. You’ll help by gathering data to support conservation efforts, as well as learning hands on knowledge about the species and habitats you encounter. You will also be able to advise others on what citizen science is available in their area and what might suit their needs.
- There will also be opportunities to help sort and submit data for the citizen science activities we carry out. You can also help organise citizen science events and giving engaging talks to encourage others to take part.
Skills and abilities needed:
- No species skills required, but it would be helpful to have some marine ID knowledge, however we are here to help with that.
Specific considerations:
- Some of this role (surveying) will entail working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, but no extreme weather. The sites we survey are often remote and require walking to reach them. The ground is unstable, rocky and liable to be slippery. It requires a level of fitness, balance and mobility to navigate safely. Please take this into consideration and ask our staff whether the survey would be suitable for you. The data processing and submission part of this role can be done from our office or your home.
What's in it for you?
- Be part of the exciting innovate work that is being done by the Solent Seascape Project.
- A chance to get outside and enjoy our shores while assisting in helping the marine environment.
- Learn new things and upgrade you intertidal ID skills as well as an opportunity to pass on what you already know to others.
- Opportunities to upskill through leadership training and gain opportunities to lead and organise your own events.
