Small Mammal Surveying Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers that can put out and check dormouse footprint tunnels up to twice a month for a 3 month period (from May to July). Each site visit will take several hours to complete.
Small Mammal Surveying Volunteers
Location: Soberton and Winchester
Times/days we'd like you to be available: We are looking for individuals that can put out and check dormouse footprint tunnels up to twice a month for 3 months from May to July, each visit will take several hours to complete.
Tasks involved in this opportunity:
- Putting up and GPS locating (or use of W3W), with the help of a staff member, 50 x footprint tunnels at your delegated site
- Two checks of each of the 50 footprint tunnels per month for 3 months in 2025, from May to July
- Reporting any data back to the Reserves Officer
Skills and abilities needed:
Essential:
- Ability to travel to sites in the Soberton or Winchester area and commit to up to 2 visits per month for 3 months May to July
- Physical fitness to walk around woodlands, steep terrain off of main paths
- Enthusiasm to be outdoors and to learn how to identify dormice footprints
- Ability to learn to use a GPS and What3Words on your smart phone to aid locating tunnels
- An interest in natural history and wildlife
Desirable:
- Previous experience with footprint tunnels
- Ability to use excel to enter data from surveys
- To be available during weekdays for the initial set up of the survey and to receive training
