Save Every Drop
Here in Hampshire, we often take for granted something that is actually an incredible luxury: clean water brought directly into our homes. With this precious natural resource available at the turn of a tap it can be easy to overlook where it comes from, and to forget about leaving a share for nature.
Much of the county's water is drawn from a chalk aquifer deep below ground, in a process called 'abstraction'. But we aren't the only ones using this hidden store: our beautiful chalk streams also rely on it for a water supply, and their wonderful wildlife can suffer if there isn't enough to go around.
We're teaming up with Southern Water to tackle this issue through the Save Every Drop project, which is part of the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme. Abstraction is based on public demand - the more water we use, the more needs to be drawn from the aquifer. Can you keep the flow going?
Free water saving home visits
"I had gadgets in my taps, a new shower head, and a water butt installed for free. I'm very careful about my water usage, so was pleased to be able to save more. I feel very lucky to have won money off my bills; it'll help during the crisis."Prize Draw Winner 2022
"Our water saving visit was very interesting and useful. Among other things, the gentleman measured the water flow from our taps and showers, which I was pleased came out as normal. But we still try to use less water. He also made sure there were no leaks in the system, which was especially reassuring. Winning the prize was a real surprise - something that doesn't usually happen to me! A real win-win situation."Prize Draw Winner 2021
